Photograph of the pillar room, south wing of the Mater Hospital. Note: the room was initially used as the temporary hospital chapel from 1861, before becoming a reception room/day room for patients as shown here, then used for Board meetings, and its current use as a reception/event room. The large painting on the right hand side over the fireplace is a portrait of Archbishop of Dublin Cardinal Paul Cullen, a great benefactor and supporter of the Mater, and still hangs in the Pillar Room today along with the three paintings on the back wall which were donated in 1861 on the occasion of the Mater’s opening. The fireplaces have long since been removed.

[1898]

Photograph of the hospital chapel in the west wing in the Mater Hospital. The chapel was constructed as part of the newly built West Wing (opened in 1886) to replace the temporary chapel in the Pillar Room, and occupied the space of 2 floors, from the first floor to the roof. When the current chapel was built and opened in 1937, it was deconsecrated, and a new floor was installed below the windows to create four more wards; St Agatha’s and St Cecilia’s Wards (female surgical) on the top floor and St Gabriel’s and St Agnes’ Wards (female medical) on the middle floor (the current 2nd floor). St Agnes’s Ward later became the National Spinal Unit. In the mid-1970’s, St Agatha’s and St Cecilia’s Wards were reconstructed as an intensive care unit. A new ceiling was put in place below the ornate ceiling of the original chapel, leaving the original decorated ceiling intact. With the recent renovation of the former I.C.U. into The Pillar Centre for Transformative Healthcare in 2018, a section of the original chapel ceiling has been restored and is on display.
