This file contains 46 objects comprising of optical and medical instruments collected by and used by Oliver FitzGerald.

1950-1999

James F FitzGerald was the son of Martin FitzGerald, and grandson of Alexis FitzGerald. James was the brother of Alexis FitzGerald (1831-1878) and Oliver FitzGerald (1833-1903). This series is arranged into five files, which cover James's medical training and Royal Navy career. His 28 medical training certificates, awarded to him by the Catholic University of Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Mercer's Hospital Dublin and the Meath Hospital are arranged chronologically and by institution. The series also contains James's hospital and lecture notes. In 1860, James joined the Royal Navy as Assistant Surgeon. His work is presented in the final two files which contain HMS Royal Albert, Princess Royal, Revenge and Bellerophon crew sick logs and one photograph of James in his Royal Navy uniform. The series also contains objects and four books which James acquired as 'prizeman' and 'gold medalist'. These are located in the library catalogue. 1857-1866

Alexis FitzGerald was the son of Martin Fitzgerald, the grandson of Alexis FitzGerald (1748-1821) and the brother of Doctor James F FitzGerald. Alexis was the first to study medicine in the FitzGerald family, graduating in 1855. This series contains 29 Medical Certificates, awarded to him, by the Original School of Medicine, Mercer's Hospital Dublin, Charitable Informary Jervis Street and the Pathological Society of Ireland. The series also contains four book which are located in the library catalogue. 1850-1856

Alexis FitzGerald was the son of Oliver Fitzgerald (1833-1903) and the grandson of Martin FitzGerald and the great grandson of Alexis FitzGerald (1748-1821). He was the father of Prof. Oliver FitzGerald (1910-1987), Doctor Patrick Alexis Martin FitzGerald (1911-1978), Surgeon at the Jervis Street Hospital, Doctor Gerald Fitzgerald and Alexis James Oliver FitzGerald (1916-1985), Solicitor. Doctor Alexis FitzGerald L.R.C.P&S (1874-1954) studied medicine at the Catholic University of Ireland. Following his graduation he took up the position of Medical Superintendent at the Waterford District Asylum. This series predominantly focuses on his career as the Assistant Medical Officer (c.1900-1917) and the Medical Superintendent (c.1917-1941) at the Waterford District Asylum (Saint Otteran's Hospital). This series also contains one book which is catalogued in the Library - Turner, Edward, Elements of chemistry (London, 1831) – inscription Alexis J Fitzgerald, 8 Gardiner St Upper, 16 October 1894.
